The big news last week was that Facebook is going public, so articles about the repercussions of this financial move were circulating around the office. In addition, we found a study that major social networks Facebook and Twitter are more addictive than alcohol and cigarettes interesting and kind of scary. Browse through this week’s FSC reading list to find out what else we read this week.
Ashley: Since Facebook filed for an IPO last week, we’ve become privy to detailed information about the company’s finances, particularly their revenue sources. I found it interesting to read that Facebook generated $3.1 billion in advertising revenue in 2011 alone. And it looks like that number is about to jump even higher as rumors fly that Facebook will soon brings ads to mobile devices.
Andy: Fox News reported yesterday that based on a study done by University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, Facebook and Twitter are more addicting than Cigarettes and Alcohol. As a frequent user of both social networks and as a social drinker (I don’t smoke, though), I can honestly say that I do have more frequent urges to check Facebook and/or Twitter than I do to have a beer. Yikes.
Noelle: Caring is sharing in the world of marketing and it has been proven that those that share content are not only driving traffic but gaining new customers. This infographic explains how content marketing is working and the success company’s are seeing. There may even be a few tips in there on how to improve.
Sally: The power of blogging proved victorious for an ambitious job seeker who wrote a blog post about why the social monitoring tool, Radian 6, which we here at FSC use quite often, should hire him. Instead of just another resume within the seemingly endless stack on the community director’s desk, the Mount Allison University student demonstrated his knowledge of social media and the company for which he was applying complete with some pretty visuals. And what do you know, he beat out all of the resume applications and was granted a phone interview within 24 hours of his blog post.
