Facebook Timeline: Our Favorite Features

January 25, 2012 | Posted by FSC Interactive

Ready or not, here it comes. Facebook announced yesterday that Timeline will be coming to all users in the next few weeks. If you’re nervous about those less-than-stellar photos, don’t worry. Users will have seven days to preview what information is shared and hide or remove anything they don’t want seen. Plus, there are a ton of tips on cleaning up your Facebook profile.

Regardless of whether or not you currently use Timeline, the time has come to embrace it with open arms. To help you, we’ve come up with our favorite new features of Timeline. Take a look.

1. Andy – The Cover Photo. I love, love, love the new Cover Photo feature on Timeline. To me, the cover photo is like a first impression; it’s an expression of who you are, what you believe in, etc. You know the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words?” Well, your cover photo says 1,000 words….about you. For example, my cover photo for a while was a close up of a tye-dye shirt, because that’s something I love to make. Currently it’s an anti-sopa cover photo I got from Brooke. I won’t lie, I might have made a snap judgement or two about a person based on their cover photo (yes, I’m that person). Maybe I’m reading too deep into this, but I just can’t get enough. If you need some inspiration, check out these 40 really creative cover photos.

2. Brooke - Info & Life Events. For many, including myself, we filled out the Info/About Us section of our Facebook page the day we signed up for an account and aside from maybe adding that we graduated college, got a job, got engaged or are now married, we haven’t touched it since. Well, take the time now to do a little spring cleaning or as Facebook suggests, “Update Info,” located to the far right of your Profile Page directly below your Cover Photo. It’s pretty user friendly and lays everything out nice and neat, making those horrible, sappy quotes you posted regarding the end of your high school relationship even more prevalent. Similar to updating your Info, Facebook is now giving you the opportunity to add a Life Event to your timeline, such as the ones I mentioned above. So whip out your resume and upload that work experience or go through the box of old love letters and let the whole world know when you and “horrible, sappy quotes boy or girl” broke up.

3. Noelle
– My favorite feature of the new Facebook Timeline is the ability to quickly jump from content by month and even years. For those of you who love to reminisce, this feature might just be your favorite, too! You can now think of Facebook as your own virtual scrapbook full of big photos, memorable posts and life events, which can be quickly viewed by clicking the timeline bar on the right of your profile page. Facebook is now not only about what is happening currently but can feature your past, dating all the way back to the day you were born, giving you the ability to add pre-Facebook memories and events. How cool is that? So get ready Facebook users, a trip down memory lane is now just a click away!

4. Sally – For those of you who would rather leave the past behind and the thought of having it regurgitated on a screen for all of Facebook to see is causing hyperventilation: relax. With the Activity Log, you can control what of everything you’ve ever shared on Facebook appears on your Timeline. Just click on the Activity Log on the upper right side of your Timeline, under your cover photo. The comforting part is you have the sole authority and access of your Activity Log, which is a comprehensive archive of every post, tagged photo and connection on Facebook, dating back to the day you created an account.  Next to each activity are two icons: one indicating who the post is shared with and one for allowing it on your timeline. Each can be controlled based on the extent to which you’d like to share. Another feature within the Activity Log that you can activate is Timeline Review, which is a cue of all pending posts or photos for you to approve. So don’t worry, Facebook Timeline is not in control of you, you are in control of Facebook Timeline.

Facebook Timeline Map feature5. Ashley – My favorite feature is the new Facebook Timeline Map functionality. You can add in places you’ve lived, visited (like cities or favorite restaurants), and places you’ve traveled to. It gives you the ability to tag photos to the map and add personal stories. It allows you to keep a virtual scrapbook of your adventures, and for a travel enthusiast like myself, it’s the perfect way to keep track of where I’ve been and where I want to go!
