What We Are Reading

What We’re Reading | Week of December 19, 2011

December 21, 2011 | Posted by FSC Interactive

As the New Year approaches, we look back on what worked and what didn’t in 2011 with the ubiquitous year-end lists popping up all over the Internet. Our online literature scavenging also yielded how the White House is leveraging Twitter to field potential policy decisions, how Instagram is quickly on the rise and last minute online gifts to send via email for those of us who just realized Christmas is three days away. Consider this your holiday reading gift from FSC to you. Merry Christmas!

Ashley: You know Twitter has become a mainstream communication tool when the White House uses Twitter to launch a campaign to gain support on specific legislation. On Tuesday, the White House Twitter account launched a campaign using the hashtag #40Dollars to get people to share how $40 less in each paycheck would affect middle-class Americans. The White House is hoping to leverage real-world support to sway Speaker of the House John Boehner to call another vote to greenlight the extension of the payroll tax cut.

Andy: One of my favorite things about the end of the year, besides the holiday parties, is lists. You know, wrap-up lists, recap lists, top-10 lists, etc. My personal favorites so far:  Top 10 Twitter Trends for 2011, Top 10 Fastest Rising Google Searches in 2011 and TLC’s Top 10 2011 Trends We Wouldn’t Be Caught Dead In. These lists are like CliffsNotes for life. And, second only to the recap lists in terms of my favorite things are the prediction lists. Once we’ve all relished in the year that’s past, people start making predictions about the year to come. My favorite 2012 prediction list is from Fast Company: 10 Bold Tech Predictions For 2012. My favorite of their predictions is “a significant new player will emerge in the social networking space.” I can’t wait to see what it is!

Noelle: 22+ Last Minute Gifts You Can Send by Email – Still looking for the perfect gifts? You’re in luck! Mashable has 22+ great gifts for everyone you know that can be sent by email. That’s right, no waiting in line at the mall of sitting in traffic in the parking lot. These are gifts you can buy at ease from the comfort of your home, holiday hustle and bustle free! So forget waiting on Santa, Mashable is saving you from the Naughty List this year.

Tiffany: Short Updates with Coupons – That’s what your Facebook Fans want. Curb the press machine, your Facebook and Twitter followers care less about company news and crave promotions and discounts. It’s probably not much of a surprise, but if you are wondering if you really need that Facebook Page, consider that 36% of social media users trust brands with Pages more than those without and with trust comes larger purchasing amounts!
Sally: If you haven’t jumped on the Instagram train, it’s time to ride the rails because according to Social Fresh, Instagram is just about to pass Four Square in the mobile app race. Not only does Instagram turn the most mundane pictures into cool, vintage looking digital Polaroids, but it also doesn’t close off a person’s or business’ audience like Facebook or Twitter can with anyone who isn’t a fan or follower. Instagram is a great way to show the human or relatable side to your business, as companies like Brooklyn Bowl, Starbucks and Burberry have done by using behind the scenes type Instagrams. So what are you waiting for? All aboard the Instagram train!
Burke: Google Knows When You Are (Un)Happy. Here’s an interesting post on how negative emotion could hurt your rankings. One of Google’s patents describes a system that solves this problem by determining what the author is talking about, and then understanding whether the sentiment is positive, negative, or neutral.
